(A movement for establishing, outstanding books of Gujarati literature at the national level)

Established in 2005

The Concept: To celebrate the Golden Jubilee year of the literary career of Shri Dinkar Joshi, a function was held at Tejpal auditorium, Mumbai on 11/12/2004 under the banner of ‘Amruta’ and other organisations. The guests of Honours were Respected Shri Rameshbhai Oza, Shri Anil Ambani the then managing Director of Reliance Industries, smt. Dhiruban Patel, the then president of the Gujarati Sahitya Parishad, shri Shravankumar Garg, the editor of Gujarati daily ‘Divya Bhaskar’ and Shri Kumar Ketkar, the then editor of Marathi daily ‘Loksatta’.

In course of his response of the felicitation, Shri Dinkar Joshi said that we have a lot of translated work from other languages in Gujarati, right from Gurudev Tagore to Gulshan Nanda. However the reverse trend is almost nil. To set right this trend, I would like to have a foundation with an objective to get the Gujarati literary works to be translated and published in different Indian regional languages including English. He quoted an example of his own experience of ‘Prakashno Padchhayo’ which was translated in Marathi but was not published till it was financed by a trust. Shri Mangubhai Dattani, a businessman and social worker of Kandivali proposed to offer a subsidy for this publication from his trust. As soon as the book was published in Marathi and immediately within two years time it was dramatized and staged in Marathi, Hindi, Gujarati and English. Subsequently this novel was translated in Hindi and other languages. All these was due to the timely financial assistance of a trust. Looking towards this experience we should have a similar trust.

In response, Shri Anil Ambani spontaneously declared a  donation of Rs.Eleven Lacs and subsequently others also followed. With this the trust named ‘Gujarati Sahitya Pradan Pratishthan’ was formed. With Mr. Dinkar Joshi as Managing Trustee and Shri Rameshbhai Oza and Shri Suren Thakar ‘Mehul’ as trustees.

Objective: To select outstanding books from Gujarati literature, to translate them into other Indian regional languages including English and to publish them. Read More >>

Special Feature: The foundation gets the translated books published through welknown commercial publishers of the concerned languages. The foundation pays specific grant to the publisher according to its laid down norms. The foundation pays honorarium to the author and the translator also. The author/translator gets certain copies of the book as per the agreement with the publisher. The responsibility of the sale of the book lies with the publisher and hence the sale becomes easy. The foundation possesses a list of publishers and translators mostly in all Indian languages, under this project.

Achievement: Within six years of its establishment, the foundation has assisted in publishing 25 Gujarati books through publishers, in Hindi, English, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam languages.

Selection of the book: An author can contact the foundation for any of his own outstanding publication. The foundation also can select any publication and covers it under this process. The arrangement for publication of such a book is limited only up to single edition and the copyright remains with the author. The author/or his heir/or the translators only has to give a letter of consent to the rules of the foundation.

Keeping in view the basic objective of the trust, it has been decided to extend the benefit of the subsidy to maximum Gujarati books and their authors from the year 2012. The subsidy is made available to any author who wishes to get his/her book translated in other language at his/her own. The trust shall extend the subsidy amount with the ceiling of Rs. 25000/- on  approval of the book. The author who is interested may write the administrative office of the trust alongwith a self addressed stamped envelop and get the necessary forms etc.  The Ms. does not fall within the purview of this script.
